The _wige History

2012

2012: Our 30 years as an independent media services company demands that we maintain traditional values, but also inspires us to explore new territory! Our expansion into additional business sectors and our enhanced portfolio with its long-term perspective prompted us to renew our structures, and also conceive a new logo symbolising our group of companies, with all the consequences that entails for our internal and external identity. The new _wige group - The Storytelling Company - adopts an entirely new look and structure.

2006

2006: The move from Frechen to the Cologne-Ossendorf media complex opens new avenues for growth. The founding of media business SAMIPA MEDIA S.A. in Monaco takes WIGE another step towards multinational company status, allowing more effective service delivery to the TV growth markets of the future in the Mediterranean region. The new subsidiary, formed from local business SAMIPA, boasts long-term client relationships in Monaco, France and Italy, and many years of experience in TV production. A marquee success for the new network: WIGE is assigned the task of global distribution by Scuderia Ferrari.

2005

2005: WIGE rolls out the HDTV OB vehicle HD 1, bringing the future of television to the market. This is followed by the development of the junior model, HD SIGNS. At the World Games in Duisburg, the competition for non-Olympic sporting disciplines, WIGE is Host Broadcaster for TV and produces footage for 40 sporting disciplines and 177 medal contests. In partnership with Monegasque company SAMIPA S.A., the TV experts broadcast the coronation of Prince Albert II direct from Monte Carlo. WIGE is responsible for the entire technical implementation of the ceremony, a headline-making event around the globe, and produces the World Feed for all TV stations around the world. WIGE also adds Grand Prix Masters as a partner: WIGE is commissioned to provide TV production and data services for the race series featuring Formula 1 legends such as Nigel Mansell, Emerson Fittipaldi and Hans-Joachim Stuck.

2002

2002: Tradition has a name – WIGE DATA, the new brand identity for the subsidiary responsible for data results services and new technology, WIGE MIC Informationssysteme GmbH. In addition, the company is appointed “On Venue Result” partner of the Organising Committee for the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City and provider of complete data services for the winter games.

2001

2001: Milestones in live TV production: Two new OB vehicles, Ü5 and Ü6, make their debuts. At this point in time, the fully digital Ü5 is Europe’s newest and most modern OB vehicle – equipped with more than 250 monitors, two production sets, two edit suites, three slow-motion units, a technical room and an audio suite. A Virtual Studio Manager assumes overall control of the broadcast truck.

2000

2000: The stock market flotation of WIGE MEDIA AG is another strong growth-oriented signal. The Television and Communication operating sectors are consolidated into subsidiaries, with WIGE MEDIA as the group holding company, supporting the independent development of new commercial ideas.

1996

1996: The WIGE editorial unit creates FAN TV, an infotainment programme to inform and entertain spectators watching on big screens at stadiums, arenas and race circuits. Expertise in event data and results services is expanded with a majority stake in Leipzig-based MIC Informationssysteme GmbH. In 1998, the companies merge to form WIGE MIC GmbH. WIGE embarks on a partnership with international skiing association FIS to provide comprehensive data services. The partnership still exists today.

1978

1978: US racer Mario Andretti is Formula 1 world champion and Argentina win the football World Cup. Future stars Dirk Nowitzki, Nils Schumann, Martin Schmitt and Swedish DTM champion Matthias Ekström are born. Another significant birth takes place with the realisation of a vision conceived by photo journalist Wilhelm Gerner and motor racing business specialist Peter Geishecker: The pair realise that many sports events still lack computer-processed timing and results services. The pair establish WIGE DATA Datenservice GmbH as a sports services provider.
